CEMASTEA Training April 2024 for JSS Teachers to Address Gaps

The Centre for Mathematics, Science, and Technology Education in Africa (CEMASTEA) is providing 2024  crucial training to Junior Secondary School teachers to help in improvise their  ability to effectively implement the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC).

Cemastea targets to equip some 9,595 teachers currently assigned to facilitate teaching in Pre-Technical studies, Agriculture, and Nutrition with pedagogical content knowledge .

This will help to support the transition of 60% of Junior Secondary learners to government targeted Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) pathway in the new Senior secondary Schools.

Cemastea raining has been designed to address teaching and learning gaps evident in Junior Secondary in terms of the interpretation of the CBC designs currently in grade 8 to help in implementation and realization of learner-centred methodologies.

The training  that sees teachers drawn from all 47 counties also targets inquiry Based Learning (IBL),the  Innovative teaching and learning activities, teacher lesson planning as well as integration of ICT in teaching  of Grade 8 curriculum designs .

The program further ensures  enhancement of professional growth by guiding on communities of practice,the required rationalisation of the implemented curriculum and also  integration of mentorship as well as career guidance.

Cemastea beneficiaries of the training being that was conducted in selected venues in Kisumu, Machakos and  Nakuru are expected to take  the training to their respective counties.

As per to the Ministry of Education, it is will to support CEMASTEA training intervention programmes to address inequities in STEM education and achieve a level playing field for 2024 learners and those to come.

The ministry indicates that the model being promoted through the training,is critical to ensure active learner engagement and inclusion.
