KNUT Opposes TSC Plan To Deduct sh 2500 Salary for Training Fee

The Bomet Branch Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has dismissed the Teachers Service Commission (TSC)  proposal  to deduct teachers salary on basis of the proposed ICT training.

According to Bomet Knut chairman Mitei ,who was address a multitude at a funeral in Kimori, Konoin Sub-county, he indicated that it is true that the training is beneficial but teachers cannot afford salary deductions to fund it.

According to the chair ,the government should cover the costs if it has the intension to truly supports teachers.

He added that the selection of TSC commissioners during the recently released promotions who lack teaching backgrounds is unacceptable.

He also pointed out that teachers are suffering economic hardships and incurring additional financial constraints is uncalled for .

The chair also indicated there is lack of advocacy for the concerns of students and parents that are also struggling financially due to the high cost of training.

Since TSC would stating  would not fund the program, all the teachers, TSC secretarial staff and learners in grade 8 are going  to make self sponsorship for enrollment to this digital skills training.

The training fee payment is sh2,500 per participant as indicated in a  a circular dated March 26, 2024.

The official circular was signed by TSC CEO Dr. Nancy Macharia and directed to schools.

As per to the circular , the government aims to provide  over 20 million residents with basic digital skills,among them teachers and the other mentioned groups so as to allow them to properly access various government e-services.
This training curriculum shall comprise of courses in Foundation, the Basics  the Intermediate as well as Advanced Digital Skills that will be essential for both the public sector and other countrymen.

According to the circular, the first Phase of this program aims to train approximately 5 million learners through various ICT training organisations.

The self sponsorship program requires every individual to incur  Ksh2,500 per for basic skills and also for certification offered upon completion and assessment.

Dr Nancy Macharia TSC Boss ordered all regional directors,the county directors, and also sub-county directors to ensure that all teachers in their respective districts get  the circular details.

TSC equally indicated that it would not cover the above training fees, directing  the responsibility to teachers to incur the costs.

Since such directive, there has been a lot of criticism from instructors among them Mr  Davis Mitei, the Bomet KNUT chairman.
