TSC, KUPPET Six-Days Joint Meeting Gives Following for Teachers

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) and the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has been engaging in a six days joint meeting, addressing matters affecting the teaching fraternity.

Several agreement made during the meeting have been  KUPPET National Executive Committee during media briefing.

This  six-day engagement between the teachers’ representatives and the commission was held at Sawela Lodge in Naivasha.

During this meeting the union made an agreement on crucial matters if teachers among them agreement to have over 30,000 teachers would be promoted.

The two parties further agreed that the government will employ 20,000 extra teachers in the  2024/2025  financial year so as  address the current teacher  shortage purely in Junior Secondary Schools (JSS).

The KUPPET National Chairman Milemba Omboko while addressing the media indicated that out of the 50,000 teachers who had stagnated for years,a total of 30,000 are set to benefit in the coming financial year 2024/2025.

The union further observed that majority of teachers since 2017 had not been promoted adding that  during the Naivasha meeting they agreed  that the matter will be resolved starting June this year.

Milemba further said that  a total of Sh4bn would be required for the employment of the new 20,000 teachers to address crisis currently in JSS across the country.

In addition to this , KUPPET union secretary general Akelo Misori revealed  that of the 20,000 new intern teachers who would be employed in JSS,a total of 2,000  teachers would be posted to ASAL regions.

Misori added that TSC  agreed that come January 2025, all the 26,000 intern teachers who were taken in for contractual terms in 2023 would be converted to permanent and pensionable terms.

Misori further revealed that TSC had finally accepted to address the union’s demand to review the Career Progression Guidelines , which for some years  have been a major obstacle leading to stagnation among teachers.

TSC also agreed with KUPPET during this meeting that they will  develop new career Guidelines through public participation from teachers and other stakeholders
