The Ministry of Education (MoE) has announced that more than 10,000 secondary schools will be freshly Re-categorized including national schools inorder to comply with the competence Based curriculum (CBC) requirements.
Details indicate that recategorizing of schools is expected to mark the end national schools status that have seen scramble from parents to have their children for placement.
The principal secretary in the Ministry of Education Belio Kipsang, speaking on Wednesday said that the new classification is expected to introduce a new three-tier system .
The new category of schools are meant to align with the rollout of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) in senior schools starting 2026.
According to kipsang , earlier preparation will facilitate the smooth transition of the anticipated admission of the pioneer grade 8 CBC class,who are currently in Junior secondary hosted in primary.
In a period of 18 months from now , Grade 8 learners will transition to Senior secondary in January 2026 .
The ps has indicated that the process of mapping institutions has kicked off as the exercise is expected to be completed by next year as part of transition preparation.
Kipsang further has indicate that the traditional categories of classification of schools is now going to be replaced with three new categories listed as follows;
- The Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Centres
- The Humanities and Arts Institutions (Schools)
- The Creative Arts and Sports institutions (Schools).
The ps however noted revealed that the new secondary schools levels under CBC are likely to offer a combination of the three streams , enabling students to have an opportunity to pursue a broader range of subjects.
Additionally, Kipsang promised that clear details of the expected changes will be out once they are finalized as education stakeholders are so far deliberating on transition to Senior school at KICD.
