According to the Ministry of Education,over ten thousand secondary schools 10,000 are set to be Re-categorized in new manner to fit the competence Based curriculum (CBC).
The new classification of schools will mark the end of the longstanding national schools status that have been on high demand.
According to the principal secretary in the Ministry of Education Belio Kipsang, the new classification will introduce a new three-tier system that is meant to align with the rollout of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).
The latest announced changes are meant to lay the ground and facilitate smooth transition of the anticipated admission of the pioneer CBC class,who are currently in Grade 8 under Junior secondary.
Grade 8 learners will transition to Senior secondary in January 2026 about 18 months period from now.
The process of mapping institutions,has started and it is expected to be completed by next year as declared by the education PS
Speaking on Wednesday, Kipsang said that that old categories of classification of schools will be replaced with three new categories which are as follows ;
- Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Centres (schools )
- Humanities and Arts Schools
- Creative Arts and Sports Schools.
Kipsang further noted that at some point,these new secondary schools under CBC levels are likely to offer a combination of the three streams
This is expected to be giving the students an opportunity to pursue a broader range of subjects.
However , the PS promised that clear details of the anticipated changes are yet to be finalized as education stakeholders are so far deliberating on the anticipated transition to senior school at KICD in this week.
