State workers are now asked to get prepared for earlier retire / retirement age that is expected to change ,more especially teachers and civil servants will now retire at a new age.
Should the bill that is currently proposed for review sees the light of the day in the house of law making and amendments, then their mandatory retirement age will be reduced.
The proposal emerged from the law makers who have since announced that they are determined to make sure the aged public officers like teachers and civil servants who are many must leave service after working for some years to pave way for the youth too.
It should be remembered that the youths who these lawmakers are fighting for to get these jobs are the immediate sons and daughters of these retiring officers.
A debate on reducing the mandatory retirement age from the current 60 years to 55 years started in parliament so as to give young people an opportunity to be employed in the public service offices upon obtaining the relevant academy credentials.
As a result of this, teachers and other civil servants who are approaching 50 years will start being taken through training on life after retirement before being exited from the payroll upon reaching age 55 years.
Details indicate that those with 55 years and over were already trained but will be taken through the changes before being retired.
Last year, the National Assembly’s Labour committee, had indicated plans that it will introduce an amendment to the proposed legislation to cap the retirement age at 55 after making consideration from the Public Service Commission (Amendment) Bill, 2023.
The lawmakers are also seeking to amend the current Act by ensuring that there is no officer that is expected to be in any acting capacity beyond six months of service.
According to Kangundo lawmaker there is need to think further and reduce the age to 55 to make the youth of this state proud of their struggle in successfully completing studies.
Reacting to this proposal, many teachers and civil servants have indicated that there is no problem with the reduction of retirement age, provided that the government is able to pay all to the retire benefits immediately one retires.
There has been challges with the release of retirement benefits previously, for instance one taking two to three years after retirement waiting for the release of funds, even others ending up passing on before getting their tokens.
