Teachers employed by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) earn several allowances among them a special hardship allowance depending on the job group and years of work.
TSC pays teachers hardship allowance which is a special stipend given to those only who work in mapped hardship areas.
Teachers operating in this difficulty regarded environments are exposed to a variety of difficulties which Include as a lack of water, seasoned floods and others with hostile living conditions marked result from frequent criminal attacks.
TSC hardship stipend varies by group or teacher grade, as those earlier in the service get more as compared to the newly hired teachers who receive the least generous benefit.
Following decentralization of resources that have seen significant growth in terms of the availability of social facilities and all-weather roads in some areas, this has seen an amendment of some areas resulting to a removal of others.
Salaries and Remuneration Commission, (SRC) made an examination of the hardship allowance in December 2014 , and it’s decision was to a fixed amount for all equivalent grades and work categories, a move that was later eliminated by the Commission.
Following the review, currently highest allowance, 38,100 shillings, which is paid to those under administrative roles and more so those in Job grade D5 who are at the Chief principals position.

According to TSC , several areas considered difficult are those which are vulnerable to;
- terrorism
- starvation
- aridity among others.
There were a total of 38 areas as hardship areas under which, those teachers who work in schools situated in these counties get monthly hardship compensation.
Important to note also is that hardship allowance given to teachers in various counties are currently under review by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC).
