It is a fresh sigh of relief to students wishing to pursue higher education in either public or private varsities of their choice and still enjoy state funding.
This is after a review that has recently been issued by the government directing Kenya University and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) board the responsibility to place students in both public and private universities.
In last year , the government stopped funding students who opted to join private universities following the introduction a new university funding model.
Following the latest declaration, student would have to enjoy the indicated privilege choice to either join public or private university.
Leader of Majority Kimani Ichung’wah last week announced withdrawal of the proposed amendments on the Universities Act of 2012.
This is after several attempts from a section of the government wanting to amend stated that the functions of the KUCCPS board shall be to co-ordinate the placement of the government sponsored students to universities and colleges.
There have aso been concerns on government giving KUCCPS board powers to place students in public and private universities, which would have denied private universities the current capitation they are receiving from the government-sponsored students.
Before the amendment, incase a student chooses a private university as an institution of their choice, this would then mean that public funds will not follow them and meaning they would incur all their education expenses for all study years.
The move was faulted by private universities on the state proposal to stop funding students in their institutions calling for fair distribution and funding of students.
With the latest review, this means that institutions will now continue receiving funds to allow learners study freely without limiting them to specific institutions.
The plan will also see decongestion in public universities will improve service delivery and quality teaching to students as well .
