Teachers Service Commission (TSC) released its 5 year recruitment target aimed at seeing an additional 111,870 teachers employed by 2027 inorder to address teacher shortage in public schools.
As per to the 2023-2027 Strategic Plan, more teacher recruitment will build on the momentum that was set by President William Ruto’s administration back from the 2022/23 Financial Year.
Highlighting on this plan, TSC boss Dr.Nancy macharia indicated that in last financial year (2022/23), Kenya Kwanza Administration gave the country commendable support by allowing the recruitment of 30,000 new teachers as part of the measures to address the existing teacher gaps in schools.
At the same time, commission under the 2023/24 Financial Year effected a new recruitment additional 20,000 intern teachers.
TSC got allocated Sh4.7 billion under the 2023/24 Financial Year which saw the recruitment of 20,000 intern teachers to support the staff compliment in public schools around the country.
In the most recent budget allocation for 2024/2025 that subject for approval in parliament, the commission has announced that it will use part of the money to confirm senior interns as another 20,000 new intern teachers are likely to be recruited from August 2024.
The acknowledged teacher-student ration is expected at an estimate of 1:40 , however , this ratio is significantly stretched in urban areas and informal settlements hence need to recruit more teachers .

According to the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) recommendations , the required teacher-student ratio is 25 students per teacher for primary schools a Ross the country.
TSC is pushing on well towards seeing that the target is hit by the end of 2027 so as to address the teacher shortage and meet ratios challenge that is currently evident in many schools.
Enough teachers in schools will help learners in acquiring quality education that is key in shaping the future of our country.
