Construction of 15K Grade9 Classes,Labs to Start in Junior Schools

Construction of at least 15,000 classrooms and laboratories for grade9 is set to start this year to accommodate the final classes in Junior Secondary School.

Account to the Ministry of Education CS. Ezekiel Machogu,the government is set to release  Sh12 billion for construction of the classrooms.

Machogu said that  Sh12.8 Billion will be spent to facilitate the construction of classrooms in junior schools in conjunction with Members of Parliament.

Machogu said that the government  expect to have 15,015 classrooms ready for use in junior schools for Grade 9 this year.

Last year December , Machogu that the World Bank is going to assist in the construction of the JSS classrooms through the provision of an additional Sh9 billion to construct 9,000 more classrooms.

He further indicated that the government will provide Sh3.9 billion for the project.

There will be an additional construction of classes by legislators under the National Government Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF) monies.

Over expenditure and management issues,  Ministry of Education has already sensitized and trained primary school headteachers expected to take charge of the funds that will be used to build the classrooms.

Grade 8 learners who are currently seniors will transition to Grade9 January next year to complete their junior level of education,hence plans to speed construction of classes.

Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) Charles Ong’ondo speaking during s radio interview  clarified that Grade Nine is still domiciled in primary .

He also dismissed contrary reports suggesting that it will br  moved to Senior School.

Ong’ondo firmly dismissed reports hinting at relocation of the learners to high school to host grade9 under Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) is domiciled.

He clarified that the ministry has not  made such plan or pronouncement to move the current Grade 8 learners to high school next year.

Ong’ondo said that CBC structure is informed by cognitive developmental theory, that will see all arrangement of basic education learners spend two years in pre-primary, spend six years in primary and spend three years in Junior School.
The learners will also spend nother three years in Senior School,thus the  2-6-3-3 structure of curriculum.
