The National government through Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has been asked by the Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) to increase allowances for teachers in hardship areas.
According to union officials from KNUT, these teachers work under difficult conditions in regions which are currently prone to banditry and infringed constant fear for their safety.
As demanded by Knut national vice chairperson Joseph Malel, the social and economic status of these teachers need motivation as they render service in hardship areas.
Malel cursed the recent killing of teachers by bandits in Baringo and Samburu counties urging the government to move with speed to deploy more National Police Reservists (NPRs) in schools located in bandit-prone areas.
Malel further emphasised non the need to declare these areas as disturbed and Teachers Service Commission (TSC) therefore should deploy adequate teachers for the sake of the education of students and pay them more allowances.
Concern were also raised over inadequate infrastructure in many schools which Include lack of staff quarters, lack of staff rooms, no electricity water supply which make teachers and students to rely on makeshift facilities in trading centres.
They raised concerns about the newly employed intern teachers who TSC has not given good schemes for permanent and pensionable terms to boost their welfare.
