Latest amendments shows that teachers employed by Teachers Service Commission TSC having more than four children will be forced to leave some of their children uncovered under the insurance scheme.
Minet Kenya Insurance scheme now dictates that any principal member can add up a maximum of up to 5 dependants who comprise of one legal spouse and four children.
This plan therefore will see several children in teachers’ families go uninsured. This is for the cases of a teacher having more than four children.
According to Minet Kenya Insurance, some of the instances where teachers are married to each other , there is a limit of coverage in the family increases to eight children only.
However, for the cases of teachers who are married, it is possible for them to have up to eight children in the scheme.
This is because four children can go one side of the husband and other children can be attached to the other side of the wife.
According to Minet scheme, teachers who have more than four children have to make tough choices through selecting the four who that will be in the medical scheme for the wife and others for the husband.
According to TSC that has now employed close to 400,000 teachers moved to this cover which replaced the medical allowance.
The commission says medical allowance for teachers was barely enough for their expenses.
According to Minet Kenya Insurance, Sammy Muthui, the benchmark is the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) requirements incharge of public sector employment.
The TSC teachers insurance scheme provides for one spouse and four children.
Muthui explained that Minet covers children from 0 – 18 years old which is the age bracket that is still under parental care.
Key documents required in this case include a birth notification for children between 0-6 months accompanied by a birth certificate .
Alternatively one can issue a proof of guardianship as well as legal adoption papers for children aged 7 months to 18 years.
In addition , this medical scheme also allows children aged 19 -25, which also assumes this age bracket to be in school and documentary evidence is provided in case they want to access the benefits.
On the other hand, there will be no maximum age limit that shall apply to child dependents with a disability.
With those children with disability above 18 years, basic documents needed are a birth certificate and a disability card from the Association for the Physically Disabled of Kenya.
