Maasai Mara University senate through the vice chancellor has released orders for indefinite closure of university following experienced students’ strike on Thursday February 23, 2024.
Unrest is said to have resulted from student leadership elections where some students claim that the exercise was interfered with by the administration of the college.
Maasai Mara university’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor Bulitia Godrick gave a notice ordering students to vacate the main campus immediately.
Part of the notice indicate that the senate, held a Special Meeting on Thursday, 22nd February 2024 and resolved to close the University indefinitely.
As a result, all the University students were instructed to vacate the university premises with immediate effect.
According to the standard, some students claim the the Maasai Mara university management wanted to install specific student leaders who were citing with them, a move which they say triggered them to strike.
The students say that they are unhappy after learning of the interference by the management in their elections.
They also expressed their anger on the university’s Election Appeals Committee that decided to postpone the fifth union elections until further notice .
During the riot, students attempted to block the Maasai Mara-Narok road close to the institution making the university senate to call for an emergency meeting , which decided an immediate closure of the institution.
Several anti-riot units have been deployed to the institution inorder to ensure that students comply.
