The new entry-level requirements for one joining into Teacher Training colleges TTCs have now been revised to a Mean grade of C Plain in Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) without other cluster subjects.
Currently ,it requires only a C plain grade to join TTCs to become a teacher who can teach under the new primary education curriculum system.
According to Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu,the old ttc entry requirements that demand students to have scored KCSE grade C in all subjects’ clusters apart from having general mean grade of C were restrictive and also punitive.
Previously , ttcs applicant interested in need to have a mean grade of C Plain and a C Plain in the following subjects;
Mathematics
English subject
Kiswahili subject
Humanities
Sciences.
CS. Machogu assured the public that the government has now implemented this new recruitment into TTCs at C Plain without the clusters requirement.
Machogu cited the fact that some of the primary school teachers back in the 70s and 80s had not attained current equivalent of C Plain in the secondary school certification but were excellent.
The removal clusters requirements has seen improvement in the enrolment for more prospective teachers joining TTCs, unlike the past requirements which had led to a steep decline in enrolment.
