TSC On Changing Academic Requirements for Teachers Forward

Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has spoken on the move to review academic requirements for teachers  joining the profession as well as those already employed.

According to the commission, the widespread reports alleging that it planned to the demote primary school head teachers lacking a bachelor’s degree is fake.

The commission  has further dismissed report  on a news article claiming that TSC is works round the clock on a new data collection operation inorder to Fish out the teachers with  P1 certificates and diplomas.

TSC indicated that the public should  ignore this fake article being circulated through social media platforms.

 The dismissed misleading was implied from from a proposal made by the President’s Working Party on Education Reforms (PWPER, which stated that nursery, primary and junior schools be headed by principal.

The Education committee had proposed that Ministry of Education to adopt a Comprehensive School system to cover  (PP1 — Grade 9) .

It added that this should comprise Pre-Primary, the Primary school and Junior School managed as one institution.

It also proposed to have the term Secondary to be dropped from the current Junior Secondary and Senior Secondary Schools.

Following  the above proposal, fear sparked among teachers who argued that the changes would force the headteachers to further their studies.

PWPER however , did not  propose for a demotion of teachers based on new academic requirements, but advised the Ministry of Education together with TSC  to implement a one-year mandatory retooling program for all pre-service training graduates.

The training will help them to comply with the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) to develop and retain effective teachers.

TSC  will also be required to employ employ three deputies in each school however  but is yet to release details of the teachers who will be promoted  to whether based on academic grades or through the number of years.

TSC has also requested school administrators to include information such as their greatest level of education (either P1, Degree, Masters) in an Excel file.
