There has been a latest call from a section of students from different universities and colleges  who want the student unions to be scrapped.

According to these students, most of the university students unions are being used for political gain instead of representing university students.

In the most recent years, number of university students’ organisations has gone up as compared to the past.

It has been  observed that these unions range from individual student bodies,to  county and region based organisations as others are ethnic-driven varieties.

Data also reveals that several  of the student unions are owned and run by politicians who they currently brand as union patrons, however , their key objectives would be voicing the needs of university students but that’s not the motive.

A case has been taken for the Kenya University Students Association’s patron , , Mr. Allan Chesang’ who is currently aspiring to be Trans Nzoia senator.

Details indicate that KUSA has had had disagreements with the students’ body at Kenyatta University because of its branding.

According to many students, sometimes these unions are too many, and as a result, most students who are lead even don’t know who can help them when they have issues as students.

Some students from have indicated to be helpless when the university of Nairobi management increased tuition and accommodation fees.

The affected  students have added that instead of students universities unions representing the student who elect them, most of them have turned into politicians’ bodyguards hence they should be scrapped.

They have also  highlighted the recent increase in number of students committing suicide and struggling with mental health due to lack of help from leaders.

They claim that so far , they have not seen any student leader talking about very serious things affecting them since they are all quiet, instead they are busy securing their slots for general elections.

To solve this , most students have now   called for the formation of a new union that will work with universal suffrage in elections system.
