Ruto Declares school fees payment via e-Citizen a MUST

All schools fees payment via  the digital platform e-Citizen is now mandatory following tall orders from president William Ruto who has declared the plan as unstoppable.

During  his speech on Wednesday, Ruto said that the  digital platform of paybill 222222 is the only transparent and accountable way of ensuring school heads do not introduce illegal fees on parents.

Ruto made this declaration the same day when High Court  in Nairobi halted temporarily the use of e-citizen in payment of school fees.

While addressing the same, the head of state insisted that the government is determined to ensure the digitisation of all government services offered to Kenyans.

He added  that this new policy which requires school fees be paid through e-Citizen, is meant to help in eliminating illegal money charged by certain schools.

He added that the government realized that  there are illegal levies charged by the Board of Management of Schools which are currently a burden to parents and the move is meant to reduce it .

The president  also mentioned that the cash payments system is technical and often an avenue for corruption, and as a result , use of the new technology will eliminate it.

He insisted  on the government  benefits made in the last year which  are important and should not be wished away indicating  that the reduction of more than 3,000 pay bills in government to one has sorted out the theft experienced .

As a result, the president put it right that fir purposes of accountability and  transparency and tracing of records e-citizen will be the mode of payment.

Latest decision that school fees be paid through e-citizen was first directed  to all principals in National schools by the  Basic Education principal  secretary Belio Kipsang on January 31, 2024.

The directive through a circular demanded that principals were to submit bank accounts so that the  parents could pay boarding fees through the government digital platform.
