The Kenya National Union of Teachers KNUT has opposed  the new TSC Amendment Bill 2024 , saying that it will not attend planned meeting by TSC with the Union.

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has already  notified the teachers Union over a meeting slated for Wednesday at the Kenya School of Government.

As per to the TSC, there was to be a  stakeholder engagement forum on the TSC Act Amendment Bill for  2024

According to the Knut secretary general Collins Oyuu , TSC had already avoided their their input in the draft from the earlier stages.

He KNUT secretary general indicated  on Tuesday that the  TSC Act amendment draft currently in the public domain does not serve the interests of the teachers of Kenya.

Oyuu claims that the new amendment proposes that basic education should start from primary,to junior secondary, senior secondary and to the teacher training institutions.

He further said that the draft does not  clarify who is to pay for teachers’ training and capacity-building programs.

Oyuu maintained  that the role of professional and capacity building  should be done by the government through a professional body like the Law Society of Kenya and not TSC  adding  that all the costs must be met by the government.

He further opposed  TSC proposal  of determining the remuneration of teachers without involving unions and the advice of SRC, a concept  that  violates Article 230 of the Constitution.

The new bill also guarantees the Commission  to discipline teachers without being bound by strict rules of evidence as per to  Article 50 of the Kenya Constitution on fair hearing.

Oyuu further condemned TSC for being silent on teachers’ pensions which have been  facing delay greatly.

He added that some teachers even die before receiving their pensions something that is much disturbing.

The draft equally suggests that TSC should collect data on teachers from all sources and manage the data according to their own rules.
