The Teachers Service Commission ( TSC ) has taken against intern teachers who did not show up to renew their internship contract for a second year.
The commission has also blacklisted them from future teaching opportunities with the TSC.
Data on the teachers who failed to report back to their stations in January, was received by the commission.
The high number of those blacklisted are intern teachers earlier attached to the junior secondary school section.
The commission has now re advertised their vacancies and is currently accepting applications online for replacement of the same.
Earlier December 2023, TSC re-advertised about 1,098 vacancies for junior school intern teachers who did not report to their schools after securing employment opportunities.
Most of the teachers are said to have rejected renewing their contracts following updates on the possibility to be confirmed to join the payroll in 2025.
According to the teachers employer, it is a government policy for teachers to undergo a two-year internship before being absorbed into permanent and pensionable terms.
According to this new policy change supported by President William Ruto,it is geared towards addressing staffing gaps in junior schools.
Even with this assurances from President Ruto, the teachers under interns argue that the initial agreement was for a one-year non-renewable contract, they are perplexed by the extension to two years.
While staging protests, the Kenya union of Post primary teachers KUPPET supported the intern protests against the TSC’s plan to extend the internship contract also terming the extension as illegal.
Intern teachers under TSC contract expressed concerns based on inadequate monthly stipends, continued deductions reducing their earnings as well as challenging working conditions .
