The teachers service commission has attached a number of leaves to primary, junior and secondary schools intern teachers.
Just like the other teachers who are employed on permanent and pensionable terms, contract teachers are now subject to a few number of leaves.
The teachers serving under permanent and pensionable terms enjoy a total of nine leaves.
The above leaves must be applied and approved through an online platform by the commission.
All the TSC teachers on internship will now enjoy four leaves which shall only be granted after applying through writing to the commission.
These leaves include;
A.Sick Leave
Teachers serving under intern will be entitled to a sick leave of up to a maximum of 90 days.Tjis includes the weekends and holidays.
Those in in need shall apply for the sick leave through the head of institution who shall forward a teacher’s application for sick leave with the relevant medical documents to the sub county director.
Under circumstances where a teacher is unable to apply for sick leave in person due to the nature or extent of sickness, the headteacher shall be required to inform the sub county director in writing within fourteen days from the date of receiving information of the sickness.
As a result , TSC shall issue a sick leave-
- one month period with full pay
- With a half pay for a further one month when the sickness extends beyond the first month
- without pay where the sickness extends beyond two months until the teacher gets back to duty.
B.Maternity Leave
It is expected that the intern teacher apply for the maternity leave.
Application shall be made through the head of institution who shall forward the same with relevant medical documents to the sub county director.
An intern female teacher is required y notify the head of institution at least three months written notification of the intention to proceed on maternity leave.
The notification has to be accompanied by a letter from a registered medical practitioner indicating the expected date of giving birth.
C.Paternity Leave
It is granted to Male teachers to a maximum of 21 days paternity leave with full pay .It is taken only once a year for permanent and pensionable teachers .
With the Male intern teachers ,they are granted a 14 days paternity leave with full pay which include weekends and holidays.
Male intern teacher shall apply for the paternity leave.The headteacher of the school shall forward a teacher’s application for paternity leave with the relevant medical documents.
D.Compassionate Leave
It is a leave taken when one is faced with difficult or distressing situations.
Some of the captured clauses include illness or injury of a loved one, the burial of a family member, presence of land dispute or Incase of flood or experiencing fire at their home.
All the affected intern teachers are entitled to a maximum of 14 days compassionate leaves.
It is a leave that is with full pay which include weekends and holidays.
