The Teachers Service commission TSC is likely to fire teachers who will not attend the controversial Teacher Professional Development (TPD) training for granting them teaching license.

All the public and private school teachers who are registered by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) will now be a must for them to  attend the training which is aligned with the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC).

Once a teacher has successfully attended a TPD training, they  will then be issued with a teaching certificate that is a license that guarantees them to teach.

The new proposed teacher’s  license is renewable after every five years and it is only issued after taking the TPD modules fully.

TSC indicates that each TPD module takes five years. Each year has six modules meaning a teacher will take thirty years to complete all the modules.

As per to the new TSC Act, all teachers employed by the Commission will be issued with a teaching certificate.

Just like engineers, the doctors and nurses, also teachers now will be required to have a license before teaching.

TSC has announced plans to amend the Teachers Service Commission Act to make the TPD training mandatory.

The commission has called for public participation on the TSC Act Amendment Bill, 2024, which if passed will see the commission become one of the most powerful constitutional bodies.

Towards end of January , TSC issued a tender notice inviting education institutions wishing to provide TPD training to teachers to apply by 14th, February, 2024 to allow them train and get teaching license.

As a result, all the teachers will from December 2024 start TPD training which is now empowered by the Kenya Kwanza government.

In May last year when Macharia  appeared before the Parliamentary Education Committee, she explained that due to the dynamic teaching environment, there is need for  professional teacher development which  is a prerequisite for quality teaching and learning in the class.

Note that TPD involves the career-long processes and related systems and policies designed to enable educators who include teachers, the  administrators and  supervisors to acquire,to broaden and also deepen their knowledge.
