The government has announced a seven-day audit of all primary and Secondary Schools countrywide ,in a a move to take action against those charging illegal fees.
Education principal Secretary Belio Kipsang had earlier warned that all schools should cease from directing parents to pay charges outside the authorised fee guidelines for secondary schools.
The directive was directed towards all School heads of both primary, junior and secondary schools that have already been put on notice of the upcoming auditing .
This time round, auditing will be done in schools.
On the matter of fees collection , President William Ruto had also sent a warning to school administrators subjecting parents to illegal levies.
The president announced that tb government had released KSh67 billion with additional Sh10 billion to NG-CDF ti be given as bursary and scholarships for needy students.
The president further directed that all Kenyan children should remain in school and it is an offense for any head of school to send learners home for fees because the government is catering for their education.
Ruto caution that those who might have introduced extra charges in their schools will see the law catch up with them.
Among the controversial charges asked include motivation, remedial, lunch fees and another additional money for the purchase of full ream papers.
The government through the Ministry of Education issued a number of circulars to school on illegal levies.
Some schools were also on spot over withholding KCPE/KCSE certificates and conducting of illegal tuition during weekends and school holidays.
Numerous complaints have been reaching the Ministry following collection of extra levies, the withholding of certificates and conducting illegal tuition.
The ministry through a circular quoted the sections of the law which prohibits illegal levies as well as the withholding of certificates and conducting illegal tuition.
At the same time,when schools reopened Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) Ezekiel Machogu released a number of orders for schools to implement for grade 7 and 8 learners as which include;
- All Learners (1,282,574 ) who sat the 2023 Kenya Primary Schools Education Assessment be allowed to join Grade 7 under Junior Secondary Schools hosted by their respective primary schools where they attended Grade 1-6.
- That all the Grade 7 learners to utilise the classrooms that were used by the current Grade 8 learners in 2023.
- That all Grade 7 learners be allowed to attend school in uniforms that they used while in Grade 6 in 2023 as parents and guardians do efforts to buy new outfits for the JSS.
- That all Grade 8 learners to occupy the classrooms left vacant by the last cohort of the Standard 8 learners who sat the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education Examination in 2023.
- That all Schools must stop asking parents to construct new classrooms for the current Grade 8 learners.
