The government quality assurance body has issued orders indicating that all private and public universities are banned from offering all diploma and certificate courses in the country.

According to the quality assurance body , Kenya National Qualifications Authority (KNQA)’s , statement released, it is clear to note that all diplomas and certificates courses offered by universities are  currently  banned and cannot be recognized.

The above courses will also neither get registered under the Kenya National Qualifications Framework (KNQF).

As a result , this means that the courses offered here do not attract international recognition. This is because  universities are not enlisted as ratified training institutions for the coursework studies.

On the same matter still, the KNQA director-general Dr Juma Mukhwana insisted that diplomas and certificates courses must be accredited by the Technical and Vocational Training Authority (TVETA).
On the other hand the Commission for University Education (CUE) approves only degrees such as bachelors, masters and doctorate training.

Dr.Mukwana issued a warning saying that most of the universities have been offering diplomas and certificates without bothering to accredit them with TVETA and neither are they accredited by CUE.

The director further observed that the authority requires that all diploma courses take a minimum of two years training, but it is unfortunate that in most institutions, the above requirement is violated.
Consequently, Mukwana called for serious engagement on the concern to avoid possible disadvantaging of students following  the fact that the new development would imply diploma and certificate offered after 2006 are null and void ( invalid).

Also the KNQA chairman during a recent workshop to sensitise universities and TVETS institutions on the new qualifications framework,he also asked  universities offering diploma and certificates to cease from the same.

Following the above uproar, now all the universities should focus on teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students alongside doing extensive research so as to meet the academic standards recognized worldwide.
