The Cabinet ministry under Education Secretary Ezekiel Machogu has faulted the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) action on withdrawal of teachers from St. Gabriel Isongo Secondary School following attacks as a result of poor results in the 2023 KCSE exams.

The CS has now asked the teachers employer  to reverse its decision, saying  that all school-related decisions should prioritize the well-being of the learners.

Isongo Secondary School closure  was as a result of  attacks directed towards the school  principal, something  that has faced opposition from human rights groups and teachers’ unions.

According  to these  groups , the action  taken by tsc is penalizing students for the actions of a few parents , thus it is  unjust to them.

According to Ezekiel Machogu’s announcement on Friday , Isongo school would reopen within one week as all teachers transferred will return back to the same school.

Machogu  directed Ministry of Education field officers and Boards of Management to ensure proper collaboration with TSC and the Ministry of Interior to resolve misunderstandings in affected schools promptly.

The CS further  emphasized the need for a swift return to normal activities, a period which should not exceed one week.

In his directive , Machogu ordered  the county director and the field education officers among them the quality assurance, the TSC officers and all other stakeholders to launch  investigations and submit a report on the same matter.

He also  pledged to investigate the attacks caused as those found  guilty will have to be held responsible.

St .Gabriel Isongo incident is expected to have investigation report being  completed by the end of January as clear recommendations on preventing similar incidents are  expected to be looked at.

Even with the poor performance in the 2023 KCSE exams, Machogu said that it is unfair to be  solely blaming teachers.

The CS insisted  that all the examination results are influenced by various stakeholders hence advocating for a collaborative approach to improving education standards.
